Record #batalladelosgallos crowd enjoys unique clash of freestyle rappers.
Peru welcomed the cream of the planet’s best MCs to Lima for the world final of #batalladelosgallos.
Ten hours before the gates opened for the #event there was a 2km long queue ready to see the artists pit their verbal wits against each other.
When the record 23,000 crowd finally got inside, they not only were treated to round after round of superb freestyle rap battles but a parade of talented local hip-hop and salsa stars.
For some of the competitors, the journey was a long and arduous one to even get to South America.
Previous Cuban national winners have been denied visas, however Ciudadano was granted permission to fly over and take his place amongst the 16 MCs.
Meanwhile, Venezuela’s entrant had to convince his own president Nicolas Maduro that he would do his country proud in the intense heat of rap battle.
The judges consisted mostly of South American hip-hop experts, who were treated to some amazing rhymes straight out the gate from the eight opening battles.
With the competitors prompted to include images shown on the screen in their 60 allotted seconds, Shadow, Od, Lancer, Crowley, Chuty, Cehzar, Cuidadano and pre-event favourite Aczino were eliminated.
It soon became clear that the Peruvian crowd were heavily behind local favourites Jota and Gasper, who received a last-minute invite after the Dominican Republic winner and finalist were denied visas.
Thankfully for the crowd, they saw both line up in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately freestyle world record holder Arkano was too smart for Gasper, but Jota got the best of Valles-T to huge cheers as the competitors were asked to include four specific words in their raps.
The semi-finals were even more intense, Skone getting the better of Arkano in the highly anticipated battle of the Spaniards.
Fierce rivals on the stage but good friends off it, Skone managed to edge his compatriot in a stunning freestyle routine including very personal information!
With Jota expertly working in mandatory topics like the US election, climate change and immigration into his semi-final win over Jony B, it left the Peruvian star and Skone to rap it out for the crown.
Despite loud boos from the local audience during his raps, Skone triumphed over the Peruvian with 1m #people also watching the breathtaking final on Red Bull TV.
