Nick Lucena and #phildalhausser from California landed their first gold in the Swatch Major Series on Sunday at the Rothenbaum stadium after European Champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst took a win in their home country on Saturday.
Beating the Dutch pair Alex Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen with a 29-27, 21-12 triumph, Lucena/Dalhausser clinched their fifth gold of the season, the ninth medal in their last 12 tournaments – and a winner's cheque for $57,000.
Maybe more surprisingly, the bronze medal goes to the Russians Viacheslav Krasilniklov and Konstantin Semenov with 15:21, 22:20 and 15:10 against Brazilian favorites Alison and Bruno Schmidt.
“Today we showed our best volleyball and were rewarded with the victory,” said Dalhausser, an Olympic champion in 2008. “Of course, the momentum played after winning, very tight first set a crucial role, as in sports in general. In the second set, we then developed a high leadership - and we have not let us take. #hamburg was just great! That even the finals came despite the bad weather as many viewers, is great. A gorgeous mood!"
On Saturday, Ludwig/Walkenhorst from #germany rejoiced the 8,000 fans gathered on the Center Court to defeat Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas from Brazil in the Women Final. It took them 59 minutes to earn their crown with three sets: 21:19, 19:21 and 15:12.
“The crowd gave us goosebumps,” said the local heroes, who took the first German victory at home on the FIVB World Tour.
“We are just happy,” added Ludwig during the press conference. “The essential part for us is our teamwork – to support each other. We knew it would be a tough tournament.”
