The Swatch #beachvolleyballmajorseries showed everything beach volleyball has to offer at the Rothenbaum venue on Friday.
First, the German teams bid to make beach volleyball history, regarding the qualification for the fast-approaching Games.
Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler were beaten by the Canadians Humana-Parades/Pischke. That ended their tournament and all but certainly gaveKarla Borger/Britta Büthe the ticket to Rio – even though they lost in the second round against Meppelink/Van Iersel from the Netherlands.
Then, the men’s #competition. Because qualifications for Rio end here on Sunday, the Germans felt confident to be represented with two teams. After all, Jonathan Erdmann/Kay Matysik and Markus Böckermann/Lars Flüggen were ranked 16th and 17th in the provisional standings before the smart Major Hamburg.
But the two German teams were drawn against each other in the first knockout round and a nightmare unfolded for the hosts. Böckermann/Flüggen won the match by 21:17, 21:18 to secure their place on the Copacabana.
That result left the door open for the Mexicans Lombardo Ontiveros/Juan Virgen, who – despite being ranked 18 for a ticket to the Games – weren’t expected to reach the quarterfinals.
But Ontiveros/Virgen swept the Brazilians Alvaro/Filho off the Center Court before beating Latvians Plavins/Regza to at least secure a joint-fifth place and with it a place for Rio.
Saturday, semifinals women: 12am and 1pm, Game for bronze: 4pm; Final: 5pm
Semifinals: Ludwig/Walkenhorst vs. Walsh/Ross AND Agatha/Barbara vs. Larissa/Talita
Sunday, semifinals men: 12am and 1pm; Game for bronze: 4pm; Final: 5pm
