Clemens Doppler and Alex Horst were given a reality check ahead of the Games when the Austrian pair was beaten by France’s Youssef Krou and Edouard Rowlandson at the smart Major #event in Hamburg on Friday.
Unlike most of their competitors in Hamburg, the top Austrian team has already qualified for Rio, where timing your fitness and performance will be vital.
“With the Games in our thoughts we would have been surprised to be at our peak fitness this week,” said their coach Robert Nowotny.
Still, they also gained confidence in Hamburg, winning two Pool matches, including a victory over European Champions Paolo Nicolai und Daniele Lupoon Center Court.
The Polish Grand Slam is up next, then the Poreč Major and Gtstaad Major before the A1 Major Klagenfurt. By then the Austrians will be at their best before they leave for Brazil.
“From now on we have to play as much as we can,” adds Nowotny, “but after the defeat to the French I can tell you the boys will be spending this weekend in the gym.”
