As the sun sets, a brilliant third day of the Smart Major Hamburg has come to an end – an especially successful day for the German hosts.
After German female duo Chantal Laboureur/Julia Sude made it through earlier, Center Court was the place to be.
German pairs Katrin Holtwick/Ilka Semmler and Karla Borger/Britta Büthe wowed the crowd with wonderful wins. Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorstwon against their opponents from Spain Liliana Steiner/Elsa McMillan in two close sets to give the perfect finish to this Thursday.
Unfortunately, the day wasn’t so straightforward for the German men but Markus Böckermann/Jens Flüggen and Jonathan Erdmann/Kay Matysik managed to clinch a place in the knockout stages by the narrowest of margins.
It wasn't only the Germans that had reason to celebrate on the court today. Powerhouse Italian duo Adrian Carambula and Alex Ranghieri also made it through to the next round, even though they only won just one game, against the Norwegian pair Iver Horrem and Geir Eithun.
The North American women’s teams fought hard to reach the next round.Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross played hard to reach the knockout stage of the #event, but in the end, despite losing earlier to Laboureur/Sude (GER), Canadians Sarah Pavan/Heather Bansley topped Pool E and clinched a place in the last 16.
The Austrians Clemens Doppler and Alex Horst celebrated a close and challenging victory against the reigning European Champions Daniele Lupoand Paolo Nicolai from Italy. This narrow loss ended the tournament much sooner than anticipated for the talented Italian pair.
