On Thursday it finally started: At 2pm sharp the German hosts Lorenz Schümann and Julius Thole opened the pool play against the Polish powerhouse duo Fijalek/Prudel on Germany’s biggest sandbox. During the smart Major Hamburg, the Rothenbaum Stadium will transform into a unique beach party.
Yesterday the iconic venue, which was until now only opened to tennis players, received its finishing touches. And on Thursday it opens its doors for beach volleyball fans for its first time. These very fans have a smorgasbord of entertainment on and off court to look forward to, including five matches featuring German teams going for glory.
After Schümann/Thole it’s time for the German women’s teams: For Katrin Holtwick/Ilka Semmler (4pm vs. Arvaniti/Karagkkouni, GRE) and Karla Borger/Britta Büthe (5pm vs. Fendrick/Sweat, USA) it’s all or nothing: they’re playing for the last ticket to the Rio Olympics. At 6pm Markus Böckermann/Lars Flüggen will face Brazil’s top team Alison/Bruno.
At 7pm look forward to the highlight of the day: newly-crowned European Champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst face-off with Spanish top team Liliana/Elsa on Center Court. And they have the chance to continue this German beach volleyball festival in style – by sealing the deal and going to the round of 16 at this Swatch Beach Volleyball Major Series tournament.
It’s also worth noting that in Hamburg’s main draw there are 10 German teams playing, four men’s teams and six women’s. Also this seems to be a prerequisite for the “best beach volleyball week Germany’s ever seen”, as #event organizer Frank Mackerodt promised!
