"There is no place for torture or death penalty in the 21st century"

Today, the European Parliament has been arguing in favour of a strengthened anti-torture regulation during a meeting with the Council and the Commission. This regulation, which focuses on trade policy, is designed to ensure that the EU is not complicit in torture, and fulfils its commitment to stand against the death penalty and torture worldwide.

Socialist & Democrat MEPs who took an active part in reinforcing the regulation want to make it easier for authorities to block the export of goods which may be used for torture, and will bolster the ban on exporting drugs for use in lethal injections. The outcome of the negotiation with the EU Council and the EU Commission will soon have to be approved by MEPs before coming into force.
