Bilstein and Range Rover Team Up to Create an SUV That Handles the Nurburgring

Range Rover’s fastest and most powerful model yet, the Range Rover Sport SVR, is now available in South African showrooms.

That exciting snippet of information is straight from Land Rover’s press release, but what they didn’t say, is that each corner of this über-SUV is controlled by the latest Bilstein Air Suspension Module. These marvels of technology played a key role in this 405kW/680Nm powerhouse lapping Germany’s tortuous 20.8 km Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 8 minutes and 14 seconds.

The SVR’s supercharged 5.0-litre makes 29kW and 56Nm more than the ‘ordinary’ Sport, but handling is what matters most at the ‘Ring. And making cars of all types handle in Bilstein’s stock in trade.

It is considered as the world leader in air suspension, and also provides premium German brands with solutions to make it possible to build SUVs and ‘crossovers’ with dynamic behaviour unheard of for this class of vehicle just a decade ago.

The cornerstone of Bilstein’s success is the wealth of technical know-how and experience gathered over 140 years. For decades the name has been synonymous with high tech suspension technology which meets the requirements of safety, comfort and the driving dynamics demanded by the modern motor industry. This acknowledged excellence will enable the company to maintain their status as leaders in the future.

The Bilstein DampTronic® units fitted to the Range Rover are electronically adjusted (for ride height and stiffness) by the on-board suspension processor, to provide exceptional handling properties whether on tar or dirt.

The company’s engineers worked closely with those from Land Rover to keep the 21-inch alloys shod with 275/45 rubber in contact with the terrain – whether it be the tarmac of the Nordschleife, Chapman’s Peak, or Wiliam Nicol Drive. Yet at the same time, they’ve ensured that its legendary dirt road ability remains unimpaired.
