BILSTEIN presents improved OE shock absorbers for the Porsche 911 (993 type), which was built between 1993 and 1998. This is the suspension manufacturer’s way of ensuring a continuous supply of essential spare parts. BILSTEIN’s Department for Special Customer Requests was able to bring their experience with historic Porsche models to the table, since the company already equipped the type 993’s sporty RS models ex works. Now, they are bringing an innovative OE shock absorber solution to market, which is suitable for all variations of the series and will provide the last air-cooled 911 with better road handling than ever before. This is proved by the results obtained from tests on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife: The shock absorbers respond in a subtler way, traction is significantly improved, and body motion is reduced, allowing easier control as compared to a standard suspension.
The key word is mono-tube Upside-Down technology: A McPherson structure on the 993’s front axle guides the wheels, which, due to its #design, may cause considerable lateral forces on the strut at high corner speeds. As a remedial action, #bilstein specialists have, in a manner of speaking, turned the strut around: The piston rod now supports itself below, against the inside of the shock absorber. On the rear axle a double wishbone guides the wheels relieving the shock absorber of any lateral forces. The #bilstein gas-pressure shock absorber, designed with a generous reserve in mind, is installed using the conventional position.
Another advantage is the construction as a mono-tube shock absorber, which is typical in racing: Since the "working chamber" is only separated from the wind blast by a steel wall approximately two millimetres thick, the cooling effect is extremely efficient. This, in connection with a high gas pressure of up to 35 bar, allows the tendency of the shock absorber oil to turn into foam at high loads to be suppressed efficiently. #bilstein has harnessed these technologies and processes, which before were used almost exclusively in racing. Mono-tube gas-pressure shock absorbers, incidentally, also score high points in terms of service life: #bilstein research has found out that the shock absorber characteristics should remain constant for many years. With the new shock absorber kit, even the comfort level comes out winning: Because BILSTEIN’s technology is able to release large valve cross-sections in the shock absorber in a particularly quick and well measured way, the new setup works even more subtly and precisely than ever before.
