Jeep® brand launches 360° view off-road test drives on Facebook

  • Jeep is the first automotive brand to offer an off-road test drive with a 360° view

Consistent with its pioneering spirit, Jeep® is the first automotive brand to provide video footage with 360° technology on Facebook. Launched first on YouTube and then on Facebook some weeks ago, these videos are made using special video cameras that simultaneously record the images from various angles, allowing users to choose their preferred perspective.

 

By accessing directly from the Jeep-People Facebook profile, users can "climb aboard" the Jeep Cherokee, next to a professional driver, busy negotiating a challenging trail in the Agafay stone desert. The footage was filmed a few months ago in Morocco when a convoy of Cherokee Trailhawks tackled a raid to test its extraordinary qualities in off-road driving.  The car has, as standard, the Selec Terrain® system, Jeep® Active Drive Lock four-wheel drive system, SelecSpeed Control, which maintains the set speed, and the exclusive "Rock" mode with "4WD -Low" function that fully exploits the Rear Differential Lock. Today, the images are available on Facebook in the 360° videos that allow users to choose between a view from inside or outside the Jeep Cherokee, the model that is true to tradition yet features a cutting-edge design.

 

Again, on the official Jeep-People profile on Facebook, users will find video footage filmed using the same technology and dedicated to the world of surfing, a sport whose values of freedom, passion and adventure the Jeep brand shares. Users selecting  these videos will find themselves on a surfboard riding the waves of the most famous locations in California or Mexico and may travel virtually through a genuine wave barrel, or do some tricks, freestyle, like a real surfer. For the first time, the videos are filmed at 360° on a surfboard: a unique experience for surf fans that Jeep offered in all the EMEA stages of WSL. The global partnership was announced last May. Jeep is Global Partner and exclusive official car of WSL for the European events of the WSL Championship Tour, which will end in October with the men's competition in Portugal (Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal, 20 - 31 October 2015).

 

These 360° videos are now appearing on social media and are the same used in the virtual reality experiences that Jeep offered to the public and fans during the summer events using Samsung Gear VR technology.

 

Shown in the bottom left-hand corner of the Facebook screenshot, this 360° footage can only be viewed on a computer or on mobile devices with Android. The user moves the cursor to change the viewing angle whereas, on a mobile device, the user has to slide their finger on the screen or turn the device itself.
